Smokey Chestnut Farm Rescue

Smokey Chestnut Farm is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue organization located in Norton, Massachusetts whose mission is to rescue and provide stay-for-life loving care for abused and neglected animals and to encourage education, community, and advocacy for all living creatures by celebrating animals and the human-animal connection.

Homeward Bound for the Belgians

We are Kelce and Dakota.  You have come to know us as the two blind Belgian mares that were spared from slaughter.  Last February we were taken from our home in Pennsylvania and driven across the country to Texas in a big truck filled with a lot of other scared horses.  We were destined to cross into Mexico to be killed . . . as if our lives meant nothing to anyone.  We worked hard – oh, so hard – to please our master.  We did everything that was asked of us, but there came a point in time that wasn’t good enough.  We heard them say, They’re old and they’re blind.  Get them out of here!  So they sent us away . . . far away.  We tried our best to stay together side by side finding solace only in our deep love for each other.  We still had each other.  But we were terrified.  We waited and waited . . . not knowing.

Then YOU came along.  YOU heard our hearts crying out desperately for help.  We couldn’t believe it!  A nice man came and picked us up and brought us to his farm and he fed us delicious food – all we wanted – and he spoke kindly and gently to us.  We felt safe with him.  He drove us to Katie’s house.  Katie has taken care of us for the past 12 months.  Katie is our herd leader.  Most teams only have two teammates, but our team has three.  Katie has taken the utmost care of us, and she has ensured that all of our needs have been exceedingly met.  It is time now for us to head back North and to live out our remaining time in beautiful New England under the care of Smokey Chestnut Farm.  We are so ready to start the last chapter of our long lives!

Will you help bring us home to Smokey?  Katie and her family love us so much that they are going to be driving us the whole way home!  Although we cannot see with our eyes, we see with our hearts and we hear the tender voices of Katie and her family, and we know that all will be well.  We can’t wait to meet you all.  We know it is your prayers and love that has kept us safe and has allowed us to heal.  We are stronger now in body, mind, and spirit than we have ever been in this lifetime – thanks to you!  We are Kelce and Dakota.  You have come to know us as the two blind Belgian mares that YOU spared from slaughter, and we are forever grateful to you . . .

The cost to bring Kelce and Dakota from Texas to Massachusetts is $10,000.  We only have a few weeks to raise this amount.

Please consider helping with this.  THANK YOU!!!

Make a Donation, Make a Difference!

Ongoing rescue and stay-for-life loving care is made possible with the help of the Smokey Community. Our donors, volunteers, and friends make it possible. If you would like to support our rescue efforts, making a tax-deductible donation is the most effective way to make a difference.

It costs Smokey roughly $4,000 per month to pay for the herd’s care including food, bedding, and medical care alone. Thank you for supporting our mission!
